The best quality emerald has a combination of the best colour, best tone and best hue. Emeralds are unique, formed by combination of heat, pressure and individual trace elements. This gives each stone a precise colour as well as unique identifying marks or inclusions.

Essentially the darker the colour, the better looking and more valuable the emerald is. However, there are some emeralds that are dark but not fine at all; they are rather opaque and are worth much less.

COLOUR The best Colour is the pure green in the colour spectrum scale: 

TONE: Is the depth of colour, ranging from colourless to black. Represents how dark or light a colour is. Emerald tone is described as "light", “dark green”, "medium-light," "medium," "medium-dark," and "Deep Green". Always look for medium dark green tone or a deep intense tone. A “dark green” tone doesn’t allow brilliance.

Why humans love emeralds

Today scientists tell us that the human eye is more sensitive to the colour green than to any other. Perhaps that is why green is so soothing to the eye, and why the colour green seems to complement every other colour (think of the beauty of a garden).

The rich, lustrous Emerald green colour is incomparable! And as an ancient Roman historian said “no green soothes to the eye as the green of emeralds”. Pliny also said that emerald was the only gem which delighted the eye without fatiguing it. He said his eyes were restored when gazing at emerald. "Nothing greens greener." So there, you’re in good company if you, too, love emeralds.
